KNUT Calls for Payment of Retired Teachers Benefits

KNUT 1

The Kenya National Union of Teachers now says the government should pay pension to more than 52,000 former teachers who retired between 1997 and 2007, lest it calls for tough action.

Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi, the Union’s officials gave the government a 28-day notice to expedite the payment of the retirement packages, and gave a deadline of December this year when it holds its Unions Annual Delegates' conference.

KNUT Chairman Wilson Sossion said it was regrettable that retired teachers are languishing in poverty after having served in government for many years.

He added the Union would take unspecified action if the government fails to heed its calls.

The Teachers recently went on a 23 day strike over remuneration grievances, forcing the government to hike their salaries.
